Building A Healthy Neighborhood

Preconference Event | Barnum Neighborhood | Denver | June 16th through 19th

Unsafe or unhealthy living conditions at home account for many of the leading causes of preventable fatality, illness and disability in the United States. Demonstrating their commitment to safe and healthy homes, Rebuilding Together led a major two‐day rebuilding effort in the Barnum neighborhood of Denver.

On June 18th and 19th, as part of a special pre-conference event to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s National Healthy Homes Conference, volunteers transformed unhealthy houses into sustainable homes, which in turn, serves community needs far after improvements are made.

Building A Healthy Neighborhood events included:

  • Lowe's and Carter's Kids built a new playground for a local park with HGTV's Carter Oosterhouse, host of Carter Can
  • Over 500 volunteers working on 30 homes in the Barnum neighborhood
  • Over $1.5 Million delivered in market value for the community
  • A post-event community celebration hosted by Rebuilding Together and Rebuilding Together Metro Denver
  • Special event guests included: Director John Gant, HUD Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control, HGTV and DIY Network stars, Carter Oosterhouse, and Actress Amy Smart

The National Healthy Homes Conference is an event that brought together leaders from a range of government and nongovernment entities, whose common goal is to create real solutions for safe and affordable housing. This incredible cross-section of leadership is hosted by: the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control, with the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
