What We Do
Rebuilding Together, through its vast affiliate network, reaches into 1,880 communities nationwide and assembles more than 2.7 million volunteers annually, assessing the needs of homeowners and providing cost-free home rehabilitation services.
Repairs and modifications made to meet immediate and future needs of the homeowner range from installing grab bars and hand-held shower heads in bathrooms, widening doors and installing wheelchair ramps, placing handrails on both sides of stairways, improving lighting and security locks, lowering cabinets, and installing various assistive technologies.
Improving a home’s energy efficiency can happen with a few simple repairs such as replacing old appliances with new energy efficient models, replacing and caulking windows, installing storm windows and doors, replacing or repairing furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps, and replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs.
These simple repairs reduce the cost of most energy-related bills, allow homeowners to live with dignity and independence, and most importantly, help homeowners to age in place in a home that is safe, warm and dry.
To effectively conduct these home modifications and repairs, volunteers need training to learn how to assess a homeowner’s needs and how to resolve a housing problem. Through the Safe & Healthy Homes Initiative, Rebuilding Together conducts training and educational seminars and workshops; collects and disseminates an array of best practices, enabling affiliates to take advantage of the most current and effective methods of home repair; and serves as an informational resource to both affiliates and the public at large.
Rebuilding Together develops a host of educational materials on home safety and energy efficiency for affiliate and public consumption. The organization also develops partnerships with other housing and trade associations and organizations. Through these partnerships, Rebuilding Together acts as a referral for information, guidance, and helpful tips.
