Rebuilding Together's Impact

What we do:  Rebuilding Together is a national nonprofit with a network of 200 affiliates across the United States.  Our mission is to preserve affordable housing by bringing volunteers and communities together to rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners.

Who we help:  According to The National Low Income Housing Coalition in 2010, 35 million of our fellow Americans were deemed to be “shelter poor”, rendering homeowners unable to cover costs of basic necessities after paying housing costs. 39% of these individuals living in substandard housing with a lack of resources are children. Additionally, 1 in 6 Americans, about 46.2 million people, are considered in poverty, amplified by rising unemployment, foreclosures and declining median household income rates. More and more families are placed in the position of choosing between vital necessities over essential home repairs and modifications.

Rebuilding Together believes the disabled and elderly should be allowed to remain in their own homes whenever possible.   We believe that homeowners displaced by natural disaster enter back into safe housing with help from the community. We believe that our nation’s veterans who return with disabilities deserve a helping hand so they may return to their own homes in basic comfort. Rebuilding Together commits itself to addressing the nation's housing needs, which is directly related to the quality of life.

National Initiatives:

National Rebuilding Day:   The organization’s annual signature event. This event occurs in April and is the culmination of a year of planning, evaluating, training, organizing, and assembling the largest nationwide group of volunteers, from all walks of life, to repair and restore houses and non-profit facilities, revitalize entire communities and make a lasting impression on those families and individuals who are helped.

Safe at Home: Rebuilding Together’s Safe at Home program makes the modifications and accessibility improvements that enable low-income elderly homeowners to avoid nursing home placement and age comfortably and safely in their own homes.

Disaster Relief & Recovery: Rebuilding Together's Disaster Recovery & Reconstruction Initiative serves to rebuild the houses of low-income homeowners and the capacity of our affiliate network in times of disaster.  Currently Rebuild 1000 is well on the way to a goal of rebuilding 1000 homes on the Gulf coast.

Veterans Housing: Rebuilding Together’s Veterans Housing Initiative was created to meet the growing needs of veterans from past and present wars. The initiative serves to fill the gaps in housing modifications and repair services that retired and active service men and women struggle to meet, often providing handicap modifications for veterans wounded in service to our country.

Green Housing: While the green movement has only gained momentum in the past few years, Rebuilding Together affiliates have been utilizing green practices — and providing green home rehabilitation — since our founding over 20 years ago. We believe that home repair and rehabilitation are inherently green.
