Rebuilding Together and Major League Baseball Rehabilitate Community Center

Article type: Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – July 9, 2010 – Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership, is partnering with Bank of America and the Angels Baseball Foundation to coordinate and lead a community service project during the MLB All-Star Game; they will be rehabilitating Mary’s Kitchen, a local soup kitchen that provides essential services to people in-need including many military veterans.

This community service project, scheduled for July 10, is being held in conjunction with the Major League Baseball (MLB) activities surrounding this year’s All-Star Game in Anaheim, CA. Many MLB community members will work alongside local volunteers to deliver critical improvements to Mary’s Kitchen; ensuring the community center’s longevity and ability to efficiently serve community members in-need.

Mary’s Kitchen has been operating for 17 years and provides food, clothing and other social services to enhance the quality of life for people in-need. Mary’s Kitchen services up to 150 persons a day, including 30 veterans. Rebuilding Together assists hundreds of veterans a year through Rebuilding Together’s Veterans Housing initiative, which focuses on delivering considerable improvements to military families facing hardship.

Exterior upgrades, hardware installation, new fencing, painting, and landscaping, are some of the improvements that volunteers will be involved in during the course of the day. Notable MLB, sponsor and community members who will attend the event include: Bob DuPuy, President and CEO of MLB; Jay Johnstone, former MLB player; Dennis Kuhl, Angels Chairman; Carolyn Cavecche, Mayor of Orange CA; and executives from Rebuilding Together and Bank of America.

Rebuilding Together’s initiatives and programs serve to not only assist low-income community members, but also stabilize communities through delivering energy efficiency upgrades and education; enhancing the capacity and accessibility of homes and community centers; and involving volunteers and leaders in caring for their community. The MLB All-Star Game event will provide an opportunity for an important community landmark to continue to serve its members and further the advancement of the surrounding neighborhoods.
