Neighborhoods Stabilized – Communities Revitalized on National Rebuilding Day, April 25th

Article type: Press Release

Washington D.C. — April 17, 2009 — Rebuilding Together will officially launch its 2009 campaign to preserve affordable housing by hosting the 21st annual National Rebuilding Day on April 25th.   The Rebuilding Together Affiliate Network, of more than 200 affiliates, will bring thousands of volunteers together to engage in home renovation projects providing low-income homes with critical repairs, modifications and energy efficient upgrades at no-cost to the homeowners.

Nearly 4,000 homes or nonprofit community centers of Rebuilding Together’s annual 10,000 project goal will be met on this single day.  Service recipients include America’s low-income elderly, disabled, families with children, and military veterans.

“Rebuilding Together provides solutions to the nation’s housing crisis by stabilizing neighborhoods where real-estate values have been hardest hit,” said Gary A. Officer, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together.  Continued Officer, “National Rebuilding Day is our signature annual event when the impact of our mission is immediately evident as thousands of homes are restored to safe, efficient, and livable conditions so that homeowners may continue to live independently and retain what is often their sole source of personal wealth.”

Stories around the country include examples such as:

• A veteran who served in General Patton’s Third Army and is now raising his 10-year old grandson, will have his DC home repaired and renewed by a volunteer team of Capitol Hill staffers.

• A single father, raising two children and living in a house without a functioning furnace and windows that do not open, will have his home repaired by Rebuilding Together Dayton.

• A disabled homeowner in Denver, without use of his legs and right arm, lives in a home in critical need of repair. He will be able to live safely and comfortably after the day’s work is done.  The home will receive significant modifications to restore doorways and bathrooms will be modified for disabled access.

Everyone is invited to join the momentum of National Rebuilding Day by following Rebuilding Together on Facebook, visiting www.RebuildingTogether.org and tuning into the live National Rebuilding Day radio broadcast of nationally syndicated On The House with the Carey Bros. & Rebecca Cole from rebuilding projects in Oakland, CA.  A live webcast about the impact of National Rebuilding Day is scheduled for April 28th.

National sponsors of Rebuilding Together include Sears and their Heroes at Home Program, Cricket Communications, Booz Allen Hamilton, Lowe’s, Sherwin-Williams, Honeywell, Pepsi Bottling Group, API, ConocoPhillips, Meredith Corporation and HGTV with Change the World, Start at Home Campaign.
