Article type: Press Release
Washington D.C. - Rebuilding Together’s Gulf Coast Operations initiative pledged to Rebuild 1,000 damaged homes in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The program, called Rebuild 1000, recently reached its halfway mark with the 500th repaired home after nearly three years of dedicated volunteer work. On October 25th, more than 150 volunteers worked at seven sites to achieve the 500th home during Rebuilding Together Calcasieu's Third Annual Law Enforcement Rebuilding Day.
Rebuilding Together is currently seeking skilled and unskilled volunteers to help them reach their goal of rebuilding 1,000 homes in the areas devastated by Hurricane’s Katrina and Rita. Volunteer groups come together to rebuild in three phases: roughing in, middle construction, and finishing. For 2009 Rebuilding Together seeks skilled and unskilled teams of volunteers to continue chipping away at the goal for 1000 rebuilt homes. Available work week dates are:

Rebuilding Together’s Gulf Coast Operations Initiative is committed to rebuilding communities from the coast of Mississippi to southeast Texas with the help of five Rebuilding Together Gulf affiliates. Rebuilding Together Southeast Texas, Calcasieu, Acadiana, Gulf Coast, and New Orleans affiliates work with local teams of 50-100 volunteers to bring homeowners back to a house that is warm, safe and dry.
The Gulf Coast Operations Initiative launched Rebuild 1000 in 2005 with a $1.5 million contribution from Countrywide Financial Corporation. The program thrives on leadership and volunteer service from 200 Rebuilding Together affiliates and thousands of skilled and unskilled volunteers. Each month, one to three work weeks are scheduled to rehabilitate three to five homes per week.
