NFL and Rebuilding Together "Kickoff to Rebuild"

Article type: News

PHOENIX – February 1, 2008 - Rebuilding Together, the nation’s largest nonprofit organization working to preserve affordable homeownership and the NFL will come together at Super Bowl XLII for “Kickoff to Rebuild”.  This year’s event and rehabilitation project will focus on providing significant renovations at the Valley Christian Center and at the home of long-time community volunteer Ella Hennix.

The event gets underway on Feb.1 at 9 am and a press conference will be held at 1 pm.   The American Petroleum Institute (API), as title sponsor, is supporting the Phoenix event, which marks the launch of a 2008 nationwide initiative focused on improving energy efficiency.  Through the "Energy Efficient Homes Initiative", Rebuilding Together and API have teamed up to incorporate energy-efficiency measures in the more than 9,000 homes revitalized each year by Rebuilding Together. Both the community center and Ms. Hennix will cut energy costs considerably as a result of these projects, in addition to other repairs and modifications.

“The partnership between API and Rebuilding Together has and will have a long term effect on the homeowners we assist.  By installing energy efficient products in their home, we not only enable them to live in more comfort, but to benefit from the repair monetarily by saving money,” stated Gary Officer, President and CEO for Rebuilding Together.

Officer continued, “Being able to showcase this project at the Super Bowl as part of our long-standing relationship with the NFL helps bring awareness to the need to preserve affordable homeownership in America and give help to those who need it, so they can live in safe and comfortable housing.  We thank the NFL once again for this opportunity.”

NFL players David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars; Thomas Tapeh, Philadelphia Eagles; and Brandon Jones, Tennessee Titans, community volunteers and sponsors will donate time, money and materials for the two renovation projects, which are under the auspices of Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun, the Tempe-based Rebuilding Together affiliate who over saw the project.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this event and were glad not only to have API as National Title Sponsor, but to see the out pouring of support from our local community,” said Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun Executive Director, Dennis Flynn.  Continued Flynn, “Locally, Homebuilders Care and the Arizona Roofing Contractors Association donated materials and labor for the Valley Christian Center work and Sunstate Equipment led the renovation project on the home of Mrs. Hennix, with assistance from many of Sunstate customers”.

Major improvements to Valley Christian Center include new heating and cooling equipment, all new roofing and flooring, new kitchen cabinets and complete interior and exterior painting.  Other improvements to the campus include a new fenced play yard and a re-paved parking lot. Other project sponsors include Chas Roberts Air Conditioning, Adams Brothers Interiors and Cabinets, Pulte Homes Corp., Gothic Landscaping, Jim Brown Roofing, Dalmation Roofing and Starkweather Roofing.

“API is proud to be part of this worthy national effort which underscores the important benefits energy efficiency can bring to homeowners in increasing their comfort and reducing the costs of home ownership,” said API President and CEO Red Cavaney. “We are honored to work with Rebuilding Together, whose people are doing magnificent work every day, in support of the Energy Efficient Homes Initiative.”
