RT's Serving Those Who Serve - El Paso, TX
Homeowner Success Story added on Feb 10 2008
On November 17, Rebuilding Together's Serving Those Who Serve program was at the home of Adrian Garcia. Along, with volunteers from Countrywide, Fort Bliss, the Boy Scouts and Rebuilding Together El Paso the group finalized work at Adrian's
home. The small three bedroom adobe style home was not accessible for someone with his disabilities. The Serving Those Who Serve program made the Garcia family home safe and accessible by creating a new wheelchair accessible bedroom and bathroom along with other modifications.
Pvt. Garcia entered the Army after graduating from Ysleta High School in 2006. He was assigned to the 1-9 Battalion, Second Infantry Division out of Fort Carson, CO and served as a machine gunner stationed in Ramadi, Iraq in the spring of 2007. After three weeks in Iraq, Pvt. Garcia’s hummer was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade critically injuring him. The 6-foot-4 former basketball player at Ysleta had to have both legs amputated above the knee.
Pvt. Garcia is now going through extensive rehabilitation and recovery at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. He currently must use a wheelchair but is hopeful that with additional rehab, he will be able to use prosthetic legs. Pvt. Garcia plans to move back into his childhood home to live with his parents, sister, and grandmother in El Paso, TX.
Pvt. Garcia’s family looks forward to having him back home to continue his long road of recovery and ultimately help him pursue his dream of going back to school to earn his college degree in computer technology or journalism. Pvt. Garcia also hopes to spend time with other amputees to show them that there is life after war. Pvt. Garcia recently was presented with a Purple Heart in recognition of his service and devotion to America.
